UC3M Science & Innovation Week Workshop on Contrails and Climate Impact

The Aircraft Operations Lab at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) was proud to participate in this year’s Science and Innovation Week with the interactive workshop Aircraft contrails: climate impact quantified with satellites and AI, taking place on Monday, November 11th, from 17:00 to 20:00, in the university’s Leganés campus.

This engaging workshop, divided into three sessions, was an outreach activity tied to the E-CONTRAIL project, a research initiative funded by the SESAR Joint Undertaking. The workshop was one of over 50 scientific activities organized to invite the public to discover the UC3M’s work on R&D+I, as part of the XXIV Semana de la Ciencia y la Innovación of Madrid, organized by the Comunidad de Madrid through the Fundación para el Conocimiento madri+d.

Attendees delved into the formation of aircraft contrails and their significant role in climate impact through two hands-on experiments, discovering how airplane contrails and aviation-induced clouds are formed and learning about their consequences on global warming. Additionally, using computers, they explored cutting-edge techniques for contrail detection and analysis, utilizing satellite imagery and AI algorithms.

The workshop provided a unique platform to communicate the ongoing research of the E-CONTRAIL project, and it was a rewarding experience for everyone involved, as we shared knowledge and fostered awareness about aviation’s contribution to climate change.

Thanks to all organizers and participants for making this workshop a success!
