Inspiring STEM careers: Visit to Ángel González school in Leganés

'Una Ingeniera en Cada Cole' activity

Last month, the Aircraft Operations Lab team, led by prof. María Cerezo, participated in an inspiring activity at CEIP Ángel González in Leganés as part of the “A Female Engineer in Every School” initiative. The goal was to bring science and engineering closer to children, fostering STEM vocations, especially among girls.

The activity started with an engaging talk introducing the field of aerospace engineering and its real-world applications, sparking curiosity among 5 to 8 year-old students. The highlight was a hands-on workshop where students designed their own solar-powered rovers, learning about renewable energy, functional design, and teamwork. Their creativity and enthusiasm were truly remarkable.

Such activities play a crucial role in bridging the gender gap in STEM fields and addressing educational challenges in Spain. A recent study published in El País highlighted that Spain ranks below other developed countries in math and science, with a widening gender gap in these areas. This underscores the urgency of initiatives like “A Female Engineer in Every School.”
