On the occasion of Education Week, the Aircraft Operations Lab UC3M participated in the science fair “Madrid es Ciencia” 2024, which took place at IFEMA. There, we showed children and teenagers the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in R&D and its potential to help mitigate the climate impact of aviation.
How do aircraft contrails affect climate change?
7 March from 10h to 14.30h
Discover the process behind the formation of condensation trails (contrails) and how aviation can influence the greenhouse effect and global warming. This is something we are investigating at the Aircraft Operations Lab, applying AI techniques, within the framework of the European scientific project E-CONTRAIL(GA 101114795). In the experiments we propose you will be able to do two things: create a cloud in a pressurised bottle emulating the generation of a contrail; and test the thermal behaviour of two atmospheres (one with clean air and the other with air contaminated with carbon dioxide) when irradiated by a heat source.
