Latest paper: “Linear Contrails Detection, Tracking and Matching with Aircraft Using Geostationary Satellite and Air Traffic Data”

We celebrate the publication of this journal paper on Trajectory Optimization and Climate Change led by Rémi Chevallier, industrial PhD student at ENAC – Ecole Nationale de l’Aviation Civile supervised by Daniel Delahaye and Manuel Soler. Abstract Climate impact models of the non-CO2 emissions of aviation are still subject to significant uncertainties. Condensation trails, or contrails, are one of these non-CO2 effects.Continue reading “Latest paper: “Linear Contrails Detection, Tracking and Matching with Aircraft Using Geostationary Satellite and Air Traffic Data””

The E-CONTRAIL project kicks off

The E-CONTRAIL project, an exploratory research funded by the SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking, was launched on 13 June. Coordinated by Carlos III University of Madrid (UC3M) and in partnership with the Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan (KTH), the Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy (BIRA), and the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium (RMI), the project aims toContinue reading “The E-CONTRAIL project kicks off”

The FlyATM4E project, “a SESAR success story”

One of the SESAR Exploratory Research projects in which the Aircraft Operations Lab has participated to address the climate impact of aviation is FlyATM4E. The project studied flight data during different weather scenarios, as well as vertical and horizontal flight paths, to identify climate-optimised aircraft trajectories. The optimisation process showed a potential reduction of non-CO2Continue reading “The FlyATM4E project, “a SESAR success story””

URJC seminar: Towards a more sustainable future aviation

One of the main challenges for the aerospace sector is to achieve a sustainable future for global air traffic. This is stated in the 2030 Agenda, whose Sustainable Development Goal 13 seeks to take urgent action to combat climate change and its effects. Key to achieving this is mitigating the climate change impacts of theContinue reading “URJC seminar: Towards a more sustainable future aviation”
